UDW Mobilized Care Workers in California, Leading to Historic Democratic Victories

San Diego, Calif. – After a historic Blue Wave across the country, United Domestic Workers (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930), which represents more than 250,000 home care and family child care providers in California, highlighted its statewide effort to turn out voters in congressional races, elect Xavier Becerra as governor and a slate of pro-worker candidates across the state, pass Proposition 3, and defeat Proposition 39.

Last year, UDW members organized to pass Proposition 50, in order to redistrict the state and hold Congress accountable for cutting over $1 trillion from Medicaid and SNAP. Now, care workers took that fight directly to voters in congressional districts across California. They urged their neighbors to elect representatives who will fund health care and food assistance and state and local leaders who will protect the care programs that seniors, people with disabilities, and their providers depend on.

In the weeks leading up to Election Day, UDW members:

  • Knocked on more than 50,000 doors, made phone calls and sent texts, connecting with thousands of voters across the state.
  • Rallied across California with fellow care workers, community members, and candidates to turn out voters.
  • Ran digital, physical, and radio ads in English-, Spanish-, Vietnamese- and Korean-language media outlets, and targeted ads to reach Black, Hispanic, and Asian voters.

UDW also urged a yes vote on Proposition 3 to keep an existing tax on California’s highest earners in place and help protect funding for In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) and child care. The union urged a no vote on Proposition 39, which would impose new voter ID requirements that would make it harder for eligible voters, including seniors and people with disabilities, to cast a ballot.

“Let there be no doubt that care workers turned up to ensure victories all throughout California. UDW members have spent this election talking with voters about what’s at stake for themselves and the people they care for,” said Doug Moore, Executive Director of UDW. “Now, we’re holding policymakers, including Democrats, accountable at all levels of government. From the county level, to the state and local level, it’s time for policymakers to be laser-focused on improving the lives of working families. We’re done with empty campaign promises—we’ve put you into office with a mandate to move swiftly to undo the harm caused over the last few years. And if you won’t do it, don’t mistake this victory for a promise that we will send you back.”

“When politicians sold out working families for the sake of billionaires, care workers got mobilized to take the power back. Our hardworking members used their precious free time to canvas for leaders who will give us the respect we deserve.” said Astrid Zuniga, UDW President and an IHSS provider in Stanislaus County. “Governor Becerra must use every tool he has to defend our home care and child care programs, and those we helped elect to Congress must  fight to restore the vital programs our families count on.”

“To every UDW member who volunteered: thank you. The calls you made, the doors you knocked, and the voters you turned out helped us win this race. I’m deeply grateful for your commitment and partnership,” said Congressmember-elect Dr. Richard Pan.

“UDW members put in the work, one call, one doorstep, and one voter at a time. You helped build the grassroots strength that powered this victory. Thank you for believing in this campaign and working so hard to win,” said Congressmember-elect Randy Villegas.

“UDW members brought determination and heart to this campaign. You knocked doors, worked the phones, and helped neighbors make their voices heard at the ballot box. Thank you for helping make this victory possible,” said Congressmember-elect Marni von Wilpert.

In addition to Becerra for governor, UDW endorsed Fiona Ma for lieutenant governor, Rob Bonta for attorney general, Dr. Shirley Weber for secretary of state, Malia Cohen for controller, Eleni Kounalakis for treasurer, Jane Kim for insurance commissioner and Richard Barrera for superintendent of public instruction.
