SAN DIEGO, CA – Today, one of California’s largest unions, United Domestic Workers (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930), announced their endorsement and massive support campaign for Prop 50, a ballot initiative to create new congressional district maps. UDW plans to contact more than 100,000 voters through door-knocking, social media, texting, ads and phone calls to mobilize voters to vote yes on Prop 50 on November 4th.
UDW’s involvement will be a decisive factor in the election because of the union’s enormous size and the care workers and early childhood educators they represent, who are highly motivated to hold politicians accountable for voting to cut Medicaid and nutrition assistance funding in order to pay for huge tax giveaways to billionaires.
“Through the Medicaid-funded In-Home Support Services (IHSS) program, I care for seniors and people with disabilities in my community who rely on me for a helping hand. In Kern County, we have horrible air quality and a huge segment of the population relies on Medicaid for health care. Cutting Medicaid is like choking them to death,” said Precious Henley, a UDW caregiver. “I’m supporting Prop 50 to hold congressional members accountable. It’s time to elect members of Congress who care about strengthening our communities!”
“We need champions in Congress to fight for home care and family child care,” said Cynthia Williams, a full-time home care provider in Anaheim. “The Republicans in California voted to cut hundreds of millions in funding for Medi-Cal and home care. We deserve better representation in Congress! We can fight back by voting YES on Prop 50.”
“Our hardworking members overwhelmingly support Prop 50 and are coming out en masse to kick out those in Congress who slashed Medicaid and nutrition assistance funding in order to pay for a massive tax giveaway to billionaires,” said UDW Executive Director Doug Moore. “These cuts will impact millions of Californians who rely on Medicaid to fund the IHSS program. Together, we’re going to stand up to those in Congress who attacked those who give care and those who receive care. We must hold them all accountable.”
