San Diego, Calif. – In light of recent findings of an independent SEIU-UHW West investigation brought to light in a Los Angeles Times article, United Domestic Workers (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930) President Astrid Zuniga released the following statement:
“It’s disgusting to see SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West President Dave Regan abuse his position of power to intimidate and harm his colleagues. While labor unions aren’t immune from the same societal issues that other institutions face, we are democratic institutions that can self-correct to root out bad actors. This growth process, although painful, creates stronger and more resilient institutions. And now more than ever, it’s vital for the labor movement to maintain its integrity. As working people face daily threats from a hostile government that protects only the wealthiest Americans, we must stand together to fight for what’s right.
“I’m proud to serve as President of United Domestic Workers, a union representing 250,000 home care and child care workers in California—the majority of whom are women, many of whom are women of color and immigrants. As a homecare provider myself, I know how lonely it can be to care for our most vulnerable community members day-in and day-out. UDW gives a voice to women like me, after society has silenced and devalued us for decades. Together, we’ll continue to advocate for better lives for seniors, people with disabilities, children, and the providers who care for them.
“We are sick of being silenced. Together, we are unstoppable. Women like us are the future of the labor movement and we call on anyone who disagrees to step aside.”

It’s sickening to think of someone in a similar position taking advantage of their power for their own personal agenda. UDW values the voices of all our members, particularly those who have been historically silenced. Let me say it plainly: we must believe women, respect women, defend women, and let women lead. The health of our unions, our communities, and our democracy depend on everyone having a voice.”
