San Diego, Calif. – Doug Moore, Executive Director of the United Domestic Workers (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930) – a leading California union which represents over 250,000 home care and child care providers – issued a statement regarding the recent findings in a recent Los Angeles Times article.
“As a union of home care and family child care providers, who are primarily women and women of color, we believe deeply that each of us must reflect our core values to build real, lasting power for working people and our communities. At a time when workers are struggling to provide quality services and provide for our families, it is imperative that we strengthen our union movement by showing each other mutual respect, working collaboratively, and honoring each person’s dignity.
“We are deeply troubled by the behavior by anyone in labor, especially those in positions of power, as described in recent reports. Bullying, threats and intimidation have no place in our movement. We welcome open dissent and vigorous debate about the best ways to make progress when done in good faith. But we cannot allow conduct that is meant to push one individual’s priorities while silencing the voices of others. Everyone has the right to safety and respect, especially women and people of color who have historically faced violent oppression, and who make up the majority of our union membership.
“It is our hope that this kind of behavior can be dealt with fully and swiftly through the union’s own established internal processes, which should be respected and allowed to proceed fairly, so our movement can move forward and focus on our collective fight for empowerment, dignity and a better future for all working people.”
