UDW Condemns House Republicans for Voting to Gut Medicaid in Trump Budget

SAN DIEGO, CA – The United Domestic Workers (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930) strongly condemns every House Republican who voted today in favor of President Trump’s budget plan—a proposal that would strip millions of Americans of their health care.

“This attack on working families, seniors, children, and people living with disabilities is an affront to everything we should stand for as a nation,” said Doug Moore, UDW Executive Director. “Instead of protecting those most in need, Republican lawmakers passed this budget to make room for even larger tax breaks for America’s wealthiest—while millions go to bed tonight unsure where their next meal is coming from and now must worry if they’ll be able to see a doctor when they’re sick or injured.”

The proposed budget includes deep cuts to Medicaid under the misleading label of “work requirements. In reality, these requirements would strip coverage from qualified recipients through arbitrary rules and complicated red tape.

States that have implemented such requirements have not seen increased employment—but have seen significant drops in Medicaid enrollment, disproportionately harming low-income families and communities of color.

“In California, this will impact millions who rely on Medicaid to fund the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program,” added Moore. “IHSS allows seniors and people with disabilities to remain safely in their homes rather than being forced into institutions. Studies show people live longer, healthier lives when they are able to stay in their own homes.

“The cuts proposed in the Trump budget pose a direct threat to IHSS—jeopardizing critical hours of care or removing eligible individuals from the program entirely.”

“Cuts to Medicaid are a real threat to our families and our communities,” said Moore. “We are now calling on members of the Senate to stop this madness and reject any budget that would endanger the health, safety, and dignity of the most vulnerable people in our country.”

Over the past three months, UDW members have mobilized across the country. They have attended rallies, traveled to Washington, D.C., and contacted lawmakers with more than 15,000 letters and phone calls—urging leaders on both sides of the aisle to protect Medicaid and defend the right to care.
