Letter from UDW President

Dear UDW Members,

We play an essential role in our communities. Beyond being the foundation of care—supporting our seniors, people living with disabilities, and educating our next generations—we are the shoulders our communities lean on, and we drive change both in and out of our jobs. Whether we’re nurturing children in their earliest years or ensuring seniors and people with disabilities have safe environments and can remain in their homes with dignified care, the work we do is nothing short of vital.

But beyond our individual efforts, what makes us truly powerful is the strength we draw from each other. As UDW members, we know that community is not just a network of support—it’s the foundation of our resilience. Together, we overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable. Together, we amplify our voices to fight for what’s fair: better wages, access to vital benefits, and safe working conditions. But beyond that—we fight for our communities and for what is right!

Right now, we are facing threats to the programs and resources that support us as home care and family child care providers. These attacks don’t just put our livelihoods at risk—they jeopardize the safety and well-being of our loved ones and the families we serve. That’s why we must remain strong in our commitment to each other and to our mission.

We will not stand for cuts to Medicaid, which is critical to funding IHSS. We will not stand for cuts to block grants that keep family child care providers’ doors open. And we will not stand for threats to the care and stability our communities depend on.

When we stand together, we are stronger. We are not just caregivers; we are advocates and leaders in our communities. We ensure that children can grow and thrive, and that those most in need can receive compassionate and dignified care in their homes. We are pillars of light and hope for so many—and we will not let anything dim our light.

As we move forward, let’s keep in mind that our strength lies in our unity. The fight for justice is not easy, but this is not our first or last hurdle. And together, we have the power to protect what matters most—for ourselves, our families, and our communities.

In solidarity,
Astrid Zuniga,
UDW President
