Care Workers Support Tom Steyer

As home care and family child care providers, we know what it means to hold California together. We help seniors remain in their homes with dignity, support people with disabilities, and educate children so parents can work knowing their kids are safe, supported, and nurtured.

Through our work, we are the backbone of California’s care economy. That’s why this election matters deeply to us and why our union’s executive board has proudly voted to endorse Tom Steyer for Governor. Under his leadership, we will have a partner in the Governor’s office who understands the importance of stable funding, fair wages, and long-term sustainability.

Protecting and Investing in IHSS

We know what’s at stake if we don’t have a governor who stands with us. Every budget cycle brings uncertainty. Threats to our hours, delays in program improvements, and ongoing contract fights to secure fair wages and benefits. Tom Steyer understands that IHSS is not just a line item; it is a lifeline. He has made it clear that he values our work and is committed to strengthening, not cutting, the programs that keep our clients safe.

“We need bold, decisive leadership. Tom Steyer is a candidate with a clear plan to ensure the future of IHSS and child care providers in our state is strong, and he’s not afraid to stand up to those who believe otherwise. He will bring that leadership to Sacramento and make sure California doesn’t pay the price for Washington’s mess. He also believes wealthy people like himself should pay their fair share in taxes so all Californians can thrive, not just the privileged few,” said Astrid Zuniga, our UDW President.

Standing with Family Child Care Providers

Family child care providers are both small business owners and early childhood educators. Tom Steyer sees that child care is infrastructure and is committed to investing in family child care programs so providers can have greater stability, stronger reimbursement systems, and recognition. He understands that when child care providers struggle, working families struggle. And when we strengthen child care, we strengthen our state’s entire economy.

“I’ve spent time with UDW members and seen firsthand the dedication it takes to show up every single day for children, seniors, and people with disabilities. I have deep respect for the work you do — work that is demanding, skilled, and too often underappreciated. I know how hard your jobs are, and I promise to stand shoulder to shoulder with care workers to make sure Californians receive the care they need —and that you’re paid fairly, can live on your wages, and are treated with the dignity you deserve. Working people deserve a real voice and real representation. That’s why I’m running for governor,” said Tom Steyer.

Why This Endorsement Matters

Through our endorsement process, we looked for a candidate who:

  • Recognizes the need for statewide collective bargaining
  • Is committed to protecting and investing in our programs
  • Understands that care work is skilled, valuable labor
  • Will fight for the funding needed to support our communities

We believe Tom Steyer aligns with our values and our fight. But this endorsement is about more than one election. It’s about the future of IHSS and the future of family child care.

Together, we will continue fighting for what we deserve. We encourage every care worker to learn about the issues at stake, talk with your family and fellow providers, and make a plan to vote during the upcoming primary and general election!
