In November, UDW members heard directly from candidates seeking to become California’s next Governor during a powerful gubernatorial tele–town hall. Home care workers and family child care providers engaged directly with gubernatorial candidates seeking UDW’s endorsement and willing to put in the work to get to know our members, the communities we serve, and the issues that matter to us. During the town hall, Katie Porter, Ian Calderon, Antonio Villaraigosa, Betty Yee, Xavier Becerra, and Tony Thurmond shared their visions for California and answered members’ questions on the issues that matter most to care workers.
The next Governor will shape decisions that directly impact our clients, children, wages, benefits, and the future of care in California. That’s why it’s critical that our next Governor understands the value of our work and is ready to fight for dignity, respect, and economic security.

By hosting forums like this, we ensure home care and family child care providers aren’t sidelined in the political process but instead help lead it. “Running a family child care program is more than a job, it’s a commitment to families and to children’s futures. We need a Governor who understands early care and education and invests in the work that allows families to thrive,” said family child care provider Carmen Figueroa.
“We need a leader who values caregivers and will fight for health care funding that reflects our values. Without the right leader, health care promises become empty words and preventable suffering follows. We need a leader who will fight—and win—to ensure care is available to those who need it most, not just those who can afford it,” said IHSS provider Toni Monique Taloa.
