UDW Executive Director Doug Moore: We support Governor Newsom’s plan to defend our democracy from extremism

SAN DIEGO, CA – United Domestic Workers (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930) Executive Director Doug Moore issued the following statement today in response to Governor Newsom’s plan to redraw California’s Congressional map to put before voters in a November special election :

“After voting to take health insurance away from millions of Americans and slashing more than $160 billion in federal funds from Medi-Cal and lifesaving programs such as In Home Supportive Services (IHSS), Republicans are now trying to rig the 2026 election to protect their House majority.

We agree with Governor Newsom and legislative leaders in saying enough is enough. It’s time to fight fire with fire and do everything in our power to ensure democracy survives the Trump administration.

We don’t take this position lightly and stand against attempts to remove power from the voters, but after the passage of the GOP megabill that will decimate programs UDW members, and millions of Californians rely on, we feel this is the right step in ensuring our voices are heard at the federal level. UDW members will continue to fight to protect our programs, those in our care, and the future of our country.”
