The United Domestic Workers of America (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930) are shocked but not surprised to see the Republican Party try and hide devastating cuts to Medicaid under misleading terms like “work requirements,” a popular tactic meant to hide the truth from the public.
“Research shows time and time again that work requirements don’t increase employment,” said UDW Executive Director Doug Moore. “They just create paperwork barriers and kick hard-working people off coverage. People with disabilities, family caregivers, and those with unstable work hours would be punished for circumstances beyond their control.
“These proposals won’t reduce costs—they’ll simply deny access to care to those who need it most.”
This budget proposal won’t save money—it will generate administrative chaos and increase suffering. In California, the cuts would particularly devastate the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program, placing critical care out of reach for those who depend on it and disqualifying thousands of seniors, children, and people living with disabilities, including many immigrants, from participating in the program.
“These cuts aren’t going to balance a budget, they are going to line the pockets of those in this country who already have it all,” Moore added. “How many times is this country going to take away from those struggling the most and give more to those who have never struggled a day in their lives?”
UDW members urge lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to reject these cruel and shortsighted proposals. Let’s call these work requirements what they really are: targeted cuts to Medicaid that will hurt millions of working families, caregivers, and vulnerable Americans.
